“Until one has loved an animal, a part of one’s soul remains unawakened.” – Anatole France
“In the beginning, God created man; but seeing him so feeble, He gave him the cat.” - Warren Eckstein
Good news to report about Carolyn’s health. Since our last newsletter, friends and relatives raised enough money ($1,200) to purchase the special shoe she needs in order to walk in a relatively normal manner. And, the pain—while still with her—is much reduced. She is again able to care for the animals, albeit moving a bit more slowly than in the past. Therefore, the extra labor expense has been eliminated.
THANKS FOR HELP WITH LABOR COSTS--Carolyn wants to send very special thanks to Jo-Ann Croghan, Barbara Johnson, Elly Meyer, Florine Tillman, Walter Gordy and Mrs. William Briggs for the support you sent with notes to use it for the extra labor costs incurred due to her injury and very kind wishes for her quick recovery.
She also wants to say “thank you” to those of you who sent extra support but who did not state that it was for this purpose.

ANIMAL HEALTH—This month we are moving from warning about foods and meds which can harm your animals to a list of “good news” foods. There are a few things that you can safely give to your furry friends—but please always consult your veterinarian before introducing a new food item. Although the following foods are normally harmless, they can cause upset in animals with sensitive gastrointestinal tracts. Also remember that these “extras” should not make up more than 5 to 10 percent of your pet’s daily caloric intake:
Any cooked Lean Meats should be fine for most dogs. On the other hand, high-fat meats, chicken skin and fat from steaks or roasts are not recommended. Never give your pet meat with the bone in it as this presents a choking and splintering hazard.
Vegetables such as carrot sticks, green beans, cucumber slices and zucchini slides are all OK.
Fruits such as apple slices, orange slices, bananas and watermelon are all OK. Make sure that the seeds have been taken out!!

We had to purchase about 50 stamps to make up the shortfall plus send out the regular shelter mail. Stamp people—we need your help!!
Please remember that the cost of a first-class mail stamp will increase from 42 to 44 cents on May 11. Customers may use any Forever Stamps they purchase anytime after the price change. So, please send us as many Forever stamps as possible.

IN MEMORY OF—
From Marion Poythress “in memory of Penny and Meg, who would have been 17 on February 17.
From Kathy Beckman “in memory of ‘Mr. Bill,’ who recently passed away. He lived with my good friends, Gloria and Bill Carswell, and was called ‘Bill the Cat” or ‘Mr. Bill” to distinguish him from Bill the husband. He was a long-haired Orange Tabby and basically lived in their barn….Anyway, he was a favorite of mine and I love him.”

Wal-Mart, Kroger, PetSmart, PETCO, Publix and Ingles cards are especially welcome.

INTERESTING NEWS ITEM—
Spokane, WA – March 13, 2009 – A woman who bought a used couch for $27 began hearing a mewing sound shortly thereafter. After days of searching, she found a very hungry calico cat living in her sofa, having crawled through a small hole on the underside. After contacting the store to no avail, she took the cat to the animal shelter at which she works and contacted various media outlets in the hope of finding the owner. A friend of Bob Killion told him about the TV story, and he showed up to claim his cat—Callie, a 9-year-old kitty who had disappeared about the same time as his donation of the couch.
