Thanks to many of you who responded to our need for veterinary care donations, we have been able to pay our outstanding bill. We still need your donations for medical care via any of the methods described below, as we do not want to be put in the position again of not having enough money to pay our bills.

This month our extra plea is for money for flea prevention. Last year we spent $900 for flea preventive and expect to need the same EXTRA amount again this year. A veterinarian who supports our cause lets us purchase this product at cost. Please consider sending either an extra amount over and above your regular donation OR a special donation strictly for this purpose as did Jennifer and Sasha DeWeese when they sent a donation for sponsorship of their dog PLUS a donation for flea preventative.

Now I would like to share a couple of stories of funny things that have happened to me. Every so often, we all need to have a chuckle:

The old van I use to carry dog food had been getting progressively worse. I was so used to an occasional back-fire, I didn't pay any attention to it. Going to The Farm, it started back-firing through the carburetor. This was something new. Then fire started coming from under the hood. I was only a few hundred yards from the Fire Station, so I turned onto their driveway. I ran in and got the fireman to come outside with a fire extinguisher. After putting out the fire, he said, "Well, that was a first." I asked, "Why?." His answer, "We usually go to the fire, not have the fire brought to us."

Over the years, I have been asked where my love of animals comes from. All my family has always cared about animals, but my Mother was the greatest influence. Anything that was hurt, she would care for it. When I was about nine years old, she sent me to the garden for tomatoes. I was reaching into the vine when I saw a snake. And it had Band-aids on it! I went running to the house and told Daddy about thee snake in the garden with Band-aids.. At first he laughed, then he said "Go ask your Mother about it." When I asked Mother, she said, "Yes, I know. I took it away from the cat. Since the snake eats bugs, I figured he was on my side, so the least I could do was doctor his wounds." So began a lifetime for me of caring for creatures of all shapes and sizes.

If you can help with expenses for any of the other animals featured in our recent newsletters who live at The Farm, please send your check to Carolyn at 4907 23rd Blvd., Valley AL 36854. Please remember that special donations for a particular animal or animals should be in addition to regular shelter donations-not instead of them, as the shelter has the same expenses every month and needs your support.
