"'It's a friend of mine - a Cheshire Cat', said Alice: 'Allow me to introduce it.' 'I don't like the look of it at all, said the King: 'however, it may kiss my hand if it likes.' 'I'd rather not.' the Cat remarked." - Cheshire Cat quote by Alice in Wonderland

“If you are a dog and your owner suggests that you wear a sweater... suggest that he wear a tail.” ~Fran Lebowitz

Dear Friends,

********PLEASE HELP US—The summer months have been very difficult financially, and August is shaping up to be the lowest income month of 2011. We have bills we must pay—and, today, when we went to the Post Office to pick up the mail for the week, there was one donation check there for a total income for the last 10 days of $20. It is obvious that we need your assistance. Please consider a special or increased donation in September. Remember that PayPal is available on our website—if you prefer to donate on-line. Thank You in advance!******

You will remember this quote from our August newsletter: “The father named names, gave dates, confessed to his part in the activity and gave up all his dogs to a private organization which helps this type of abused animal.” During the last month, most of the people he named have been arrested in Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee—along with others whose names were given up by those first arrested. This news was printed in all the local newspapers. Many other abused dogs were sent to the private organization. We are proud of our part in making this happen.

This month we want to share the following news article from FOXSPORTS.COM which we found just yesterday and which will touch your hearts as it did ours. “A former player proposed Friday that the Iowa football team be led onto the field this season by Hawkeye — the dog seen in a widely viewed photograph lying near the casket of his fallen Navy SEAL owner. ‘It just tears you apart to see that (picture),’ former Iowa fullback Jon Lazar told Friday. ‘But I thought how great it would be for him to lead the Hawkeyes down to the field and to have the announcer tell his story. I think everybody would be crying in the stands.’

“The touching photo of Hawkeye exploded in popularity earlier this week, depicting the close bond between the Labrador retriever and his owner, 35-year-old Rockford, Iowa, native Jon Tumilson. Tumilson, a Navy SEAL, was one of the 38 soldiers killed August 6 when their helicopter was shot down in Afghanistan. His funeral was held August 19, and according to those who attended, the dog laid near the casket throughout the service.

Lazar said he was told the proposal would be sent to the athletic department's event planners. To see the article and picture referred to, go to the following URL:

STAMP REPORT— Since our last letter, we have received 80 stamps from Jamie Reagin, Mardi Hoofnagle and Lois Holbrook. In order to send out this newsletter and other mail during the month, we had to purchase 45 stamps. Those of you kind enough to send stamps-let’s make September a record month!!

Many items we use to care for the safety and comfort of our animals are available at either Home Depot or Lowes. We would very much appreciate the donation of gift cards from either place.

Wal-Mart, Kroger, PetSmart, PETCO, Publix and Ingles cards are especially welcome.
