“Until one has loved an animal, a part of one’s soul remains unawakened.” Anatole France

“I care not for a man’s religion whose dog and cat are not the better for it.” Abraham Lincoln

Dear Friends,

There are almost always boxes on our front porch. Not always many, but some. An addition to the stack will hardly gain attention. This was the case until one of our little dogs (Topher) took a special interest in one of them--decidedly taken with a dog biscuit box. He was jumping around it barking and sniffing. I thought it was because he could still smell the odor of dog biscuits from it. When finished with that building, I was ready to move on to the next. Not Topher! He wasn't leaving without the box. Humoring him, as always, I reached for the box and realized it wasn't empty. Opening it, I was looking into the large grey eyes of a very bloody kitten. It gazed back at me, not making a sound or any effort to escape the box.

"Oh, you poor baby! What happened to you?" I whispered. I don't know why I whispered, it just came out that way. Looking the kitten over, I realized there was a lot of paper towels sticking to it. They were so bloody it was hard to tell what was kitten and what was paper.

As I lifted the he kitten from the box, it still made no effort to move. Topher was so excited by his discovery he bounced all around us, coming back to try to lick the kitten. "No, Toph, she is hurt. Don't scare her" I said to him. He looked at me as if he understood. The kitten finally turned her head to gaze at Topher. I took her into the house and started cleaning her. That was when I saw the long, jagged slash on her throat. Oh, my Lord! What had done this?

I quickly put her into a carrier for a trip to the vet. Topher was not happy to be put back into the house and me taking off with "his" kitten.

The vet and all her staff were cooing and crooning to the kitten while they cleaned her. Still, she never made a sound or any kind of protest at being bathed.

After a careful examination, the vet gave her opinion on the wound. "I don't believe this was a deliberate attack on the kitten. If it had been, the wound would have clean edges and, most likely, would have killed her. Also, she wouldn't have been put where she would receive help." Ok, that made sense, but why not just ask me for help? "Well, they were probably afraid of being accused of deliberately harming the kitten" she surmised. That, too, made sense. There is nothing like the sight of a bloody kitten to get me riled. And, it is possible they couldn't afford a vet, I thought. I must have given the vet a hard look because she smiled at me and said, "Now, I'm not THAT expensive." And, I hadn't said a word!!

She told me to call her later and took the kitten to surgery, closing the door firmly in my face. Good move on her part. She has had experience with me before this. I do tend to wander into surgery if one of my animals is in there.

Later, she told me that a fish hook had caused the cut throat. She had found the sharp tip buried in the bloody tissue. No wonder the kitten had not moved very much! It must have been painful to do so. And, she was right about something else, too. She wasn't THAT expensive, thank goodness.

So we have a vet bill total of $306 and a beautiful grey and white kitten with the largest grey eyes I have ever seen on a cat.

Topher is convinced she belongs to him and he guards her constantly. He doesn't even want me to pet her. She regards Topher with those amazing eyes and seems to find him acceptable as her best friend. She sleeps next to him in his bed every night. They are adorable together.

We urgently need your help to pay the vet bill and get her spayed in a few weeks. She will also need her second round of shots next week. I don't think she will have to worry about fishing hooks ever again. Not with Topher guarding her every move.
