Dear Friends,

We are in great need of money to concrete the floors of our dog runs. This past week?according to the weather forecaster--has been one of the wettest ever. And the forecast for next week is more of the same. Some of our dogs have been up to their ankles in mud. We have raised their houses up on wooden pallets to keep them out of the water. BUT, until we can afford to concrete the runs, their pens are a muddy mess. We have been putting down the ?bedding and litter? made for kennels, but it only gives relief until the next rain?which always comes later the same day! Some days the rain never stops.

There is no way to roof the large pens?concrete is the only answer. We could roof the smaller pens, but we need the materials to do that. We don?t mind the work involved?but we surely need your help with the funding!!

We brought all the dogs under 30 lbs. (35 of them) into the house with us. That is an experience everyone should live through at least once. All the floors are covered with paper, and every other surface the dogs can climb on is covered with sheets or blankets. Trying to sleep is another problem. All the dogs think they should be allowed to sleep in the bed with me.

The cats that live in my house didn?t care too much for all the dogs at first, but they have adjusted. One of the older cats spends her day cleaning the dogs. I guess she thinks they don?t smell right?meaning, of course, that they don?t smell like a cat.

If there is any way you can help with the concrete/roofing expenses, please send a donation by check to us at 4907 23rd Boulevard, Valley AL 36854. Or, if you prefer, a Home Depot or Lowes gift card would be just as appreciated. We appreciate all the help you give more than you can imagine!!

PLEASE?consider making a special donation earmarked for flea control OR purchase the product and send it to us. With the number of animals we have to treat, we prefer to use Advantage or Front Line. However, we welcome any type/brand that we receive.

Following is the balance of the list regarding prevention of heat-related dangers for our four-legged companions:

1. Clipping off some of the animals? hair (especially in the case of long-haired animals) can help.

2. Do not EVER leave any pet in a parked car when the temperature is more than 70 degrees. No matter how many times this warning goes out, someone, somewhere kills a pet this way!

IN MEMORY?

From Jennifer DeWeese, who writes, ?Last week we put our beloved dog, TRISTAN, to sleep. He was a rescue dog, and I brought him home 10 years ago at the age of 3. He was on ?death row? when he was plucked out of the shelter by the rescue group. For 10 years, he was king of our home and well loved?we will miss him terribly.? Jennifer and her son Sasha have sponsored one of our dogs, Cookie, for several years.

STORIES FROM THE NEWS?

The State of Maine?s governor, John Baldacci, recently signed a bill that allows animals to be included in protection orders in domestic violence cases. Mr. Baldacci states that ?Many national studies on victims of domestic violence tell us that their abusers have threatened to kill, threatened to harm or actually harmed their pets as a means of keeping the victim from leaving the relationship. With this new law, we hope to help remove another tool for emotional and physical violence used by the abuser to exert power and control over their victims.? Maine is believed to be the first state with such a law. But, the issue has captured attention around the country as police departments, domestic-violence programs, animal protection societies and state officials become increasingly aware of a link between domestic violence and animal abuse. A new program in Columbus, Ohio, takes animals of victims of domestic violence and places them in a women?s prison, where the inmates care for them. In Nashville, the city gives such pets a safe haven for up to 30 days. And in St. Louis, the Domestic Violence Pet Assistance Program finds foster homes for the animals. ARTICLE FROM THE NEW YORK TIMES DATED APRIL 1, 2006.

The family of Piper the cat, who fell 80 feet from a tree and lived to meow about it, says they thought Piper had cashed in her nine lives after her remarkable fall. ?Yeah, we did,? Scottie Colvin said while on ABC?s Good Morning America with her husband, Rodney, their two daughters and Piper by her side?.Piper was in the tree near their house for eight days before falling. The tawny cat escaped unharmed, receiving only fluids for dehydration and ibuprofen for stiffness. A cameraman from a TV station in Charleston was on hand to record the attempted rescue and captured the fall on video?and Piper quickly became a celebrity. A rescuer had started up the tree to save her, but Piper got scared and crept away until the limb beneath her snapped. She slammed into the ground but wasn?t even dazed?scampering off before anyone could catch her. Mr. & Mrs. Colvin found her in the wheel of a car in the neighborhood.
